Program Description:


Germany is a leading nation in the development and use of cutting-edge technologies that have exceptionally large growth rates, such as bio-technology, nano-technology, IT, and the numerous high-tech divisions in individual sectors (automobile, aviation and aerospace, electrical engineering, logistics). Many German firms also focus on environmental technology (wind energy, photovoltaic power, and biomass generation) to achieve their organizational goals in a socially-responsible way. Students participating in this seminar will develop an understanding of how companies can leverage technology and innovation to maximize organizational effectiveness.

German companies are also well known for the manufacture of high quality products; this is evidenced by their strong focus on research and development. For example, private German companies spend the third highest amount globally on research and development ($40 billion) and more than 18% of all patents worldwide are registered in Germany. Thus, the impact of innovation and technology on product quality will also be examined.

The program to Munich will likely include five or six visits to companies such as BMW, Schuh Bertl (a handmade shoe and lederhosen manufacturer), Ayinger (a German brewery), KPM (the royal porcelain manufacturer), the Bundestag (German parliament) as well as a few others. Appropriate business attire will be required for the company visits and presentations (business casual).

On the cultural side, in the past the program has visited Dachau (a World War II concentration camp) and Neuschwanstein Castle (the model for Disneyland's castle) in Bavaria.  We also frequently have attended a German soccer match (depending on the league schedule). Both the company visits and cultural activities are still being finalized for the next iteration of the program.


The faculty director for this program is Dr. Stephen Koernig from the Department of Marketing.


There will be three pre-trip class sessions at DePaul's Loop campus in February and March and one post-trip class session. Attendance at all four classes is mandatory. Students will receive notice via e-mail as to the specific meeting dates, times, and locations. Participation in class and during scheduled activities including the company visits (where appropriate behavior will be expected), as well as a final paper (due after return), will be considered for the final grade. Dr. Koernig will provide the course syllabus and provide further details at the first required pre-trip class.

Course Description: This foreign study course is meant to introduce the student to the world of international life and business as it is today. The course provides students the opportunity to visit and study foreign commercial enterprises on-site. Additional emphasis is placed on understanding overseas cultures, self-reference criteria, and the fact that people around the world can maintain/develop hopes and dreams within their own lifestyle even though it may differ from others'.

Please note that although some courses are registered in a particular term, some coursework or final assignments may be due in a different term. E.g. Course registered in winter quarter, but coursework is due in spring quarter once the travel component of the program is complete.


Hotel accommodations are double occupancy. You may be able to request a single room for an additional fee depending upon availability.


All students participating in study abroad will be charged both tuition (billed at the regular DePaul tuition rate, based on the number of credits enrolled) and a program fee.  Please read the program fee details carefully to understand exactly what is included, as this can vary from program to program.  If the program fee is posted, be sure to note whether the fee is current or from a previous year (past program fees may serve as a guide until the current program fee is available).  If the current program fee has not yet been posted, please check back closer to the application deadline.  Please also note the withdrawal policy

DePaul offers several types of scholarships for students studying abroad, and students should visit the scholarship page early in the application process for information on eligibility and deadlines.  Students are also encouraged to speak with the DePaul financial aid office for more information about financing their study abroad experience.



If you are planning to study abroad and do not have a passport, apply for one immediately. Some programs require travelers to obtain visas. In that case, contact the local consulates or embassies of the countries you will be visiting for up-to-date instructions on how to apply for them. As of this publication, students on the Germany program who are US citizens DO NOT need a visa. Please note, however, that visa requirements can change. Study Abroad will update this website to reflect changes to the visa requirements as they become available.
