Participants will challenge themselves academically and experientially by crossing borders of centuries and civilizations. Any student of history who has also traveled mindfully knows that learning about the past can provide insights about the present as well. This pilgrimage, through its combination of background study and visits to important sites, stimulates the impulse to make new meaning by applying insights about the past to the present. Study abroad is a powerful way to achieve growth of this kind. In this particular study abroad program, we create the conditions for learning and growth by considering pilgrimage in many of its manifestations. We will explore pilgrimage as a particular religious form in particular historical contexts, pilgrimage as a reflection of values of past cultures seen through its arts and literature, and most of all, pilgrimage in its essential form as a personal journey of self- discovery. Our travels will take us from to rural Spanish shrines along the pilgrim's way (Way of St. James), and even to prehistoric sites with remnants of what some believe to be the earliest expressions of human worship.  We will follow in the steps of earlier pilgrims throughout the journey. We will follow most literally when we travel to some of the routes of the famous Camino de Santiago di Campostela whose well- worn paths have been leading pilgrims to the shrine of St. James (Santiago) in Spain since the 11th century. Medieval pilgrims walking the 450 mile Camino expected to receive specific benefits to their lives and even their afterlives.
